A Great day out for all the family

The Canal Museum is housed in a former canal stable and first opened in 1977.  It is the only canal museum in Scotland.
On display are old photographs and documents that describe the origin, decline and renaissance of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal.  Boat models, original tools and equipment, and objects from the working life of the canal are also on show. Natural history information changes with the season.

Hiring our self-drive boat or a boat with crew is a great way to experience the canal. You can go where you want and bring your own food and drink on board. Our volunteers will be glad to share their experience of the canal to ensure you have a great time.
Boat hire options are:
Self-drive boat Leamington that can carry 12 passengers, including driver
Victoria, an open boat with driver provided that can carry 12 passengers
St Magdalene, a closed boat with driver and crew provided that can carry 40 passengers

Facilities at the canal basin that are available to the public during opening times include:
a Museum, which is the only Canal Museum in Scotland
a Tearoom, which can be hired when not in use
The Mel Gray Education Centre, which can be hired
